Strangest Genius

The stained glass of Harry Clarke Strangest Genius

Harry Clarke (1889 to 1931) was undoubtedly Ireland's greatest stained-glass artist. During his short life Harry created stained-glass windows for churches, private dwellings and commercial venues throughout Ireland and England, and as far a-field as the USA and Australia. Also an illustrator of books for Harrap and Co. in London, Harry illustrated five books that show his undoubted genius in the area of graphic art.
In total 160 windows, and a small number of panels, were created by Harry Clarke. This book is unique in that it contains his entire stained-glass collection, including those windows now in art galleries. This collection has never before been photographed or published in its entirety. This publication will give those who are unfamiliar with the brilliance and originality of Clarke's marvellous stained-glass windows the opportunity to view images of his greatest creations, and perhaps in time to travel to see these wonders for themselves.

A Reader's Feedback - part 2

Within the pages of 'Strangest Genius' we have images of the windows too far away to visit, or sadly lost in fires over time. Costigan's quote's from Clarke's correspondance are invaluable. We can now add another masterpiece work, because this book is a work of art in its own right. It is obvious the publishers took great care with this production and have produced not just a thing of beauty but also what deserves to be a family heirloom, I will be passing it on to my family.

Congratulations to 'The History Press: Ireland' for the magnificent production of 'Strangest Genius'! I have been reading Costigan's brilliantly enthralling text and admiring the superb photographs of Clarke's windows. Cullen captures the look of stained glass in his photographs, to be able to do this enables him to remain faithful to the painterly strokes and magical colour work so masterfully deployed by Clarke.

Book on Master of Irish Stained Glass Welcomed
Reviewed by Maurice Curtis (Dr.) from Dublin

This book on renowned Irish stained glass artist and book illustrator, Harry Clarke, is a very welcome contribution. His glass is distinguished by the finesse of its drawing, unusual in the medium, his use of rich colours, especially blue. Clarke's stained glass work includes many religious windows but also much secular stained glass. This work will remain the standard on the subject for many years and the authors are to be congratulated.
